About the Museum
From the Chairman

Fall 2007

Dear Friends:
The Museum is at an exciting turning point in this, its 40th anniversary year.  Through the guidance of its Board and with renewed City assistance, the Museum will be rededicating itself to its core mission – to preserve and interpret the history of the Port of New York.  We are now working out the details of a plan with objectives and improvements to be achieved over the coming years.  As a first step along the way the City of New York has approved a $4,000,000 grant to begin restoration of the Museum’s vessel Wavertree and another $3,000,000 grant to improve the access to the Museum’s interior galleries.  We have also created the Adopt-A-Ship campaign to heighten awareness of and garner public financial support for the restoration of the fleet.  Both of the grants and the Campaign provide for the two fundamental elements of the Museum’s future.  They will play a vital role in the redevelopment of the Museum and pave the way for additional support of these and other key initiatives designed to further its mission.  The Board, the staff and I are carefully evaluating our assets and speaking with interested parties, non-profit professionals, and other experts to shape this renewed vision for the Museum’s future.
On behalf of the Board, the staff, and all the people and institutions that support the Museum, I thank you for your interest and visiting our web-site.  Your interest in New York’s maritime history, and how that built this great City, State and Nation are critical to our future success.  Now that you have visited our web-site, I hope to see you down at the Seaport!

Sincerely,

Frank J. Sciame, Jr.
