Docents are prepared through workshop training and self-study to give tours of the Museum, the Historic District, and the Museum’s vessels to the public. Docents must provide a minimum of two tours per month for the Museum.
Entry level:
Provide visitor orientation on the Peking and in the galleries. Training and self-study materials on the Museum’s mission, background, and physical layout are available.
Requirements: Good customer-service skills.
Specialized:
First-person interpretation: Create or adapt a historical character based on original research and provide walking tours to interested visitors.
Harbor tours: On Pioneer, Lettie G. Howard, and W. O. Decker sails, describe the natural, social, and historical characteristics of New York Harbor.
Walking tours: Describe the natural, social, and historical characteristics of the Seaport neighborhood.
Requirements: Good speaking voice, physical stamina, research skills. Videographers may be required for certain projects as well.
Hours: Varies, depending on the season and when the galleries are open. 4-8 hours a day.
