Volunteers and interns in the Education Department assist with public programs, book talks, lectures, workshops, walking tours and family programming.
Entry level:
Specific education volunteer opportunities vary according to availability and interest. Possibilities include: leading tours of ships and permanent and temporary exhibits; assisting educators with school groups, public lectures, workshops, and walking tours; facilitating programs for families, including the Museum’s Free Fridays; working with live animals in the Wet Lab. Training is provided.
Requirements: High school or higher level of education, or participation through an internship program. If assisting during family-centered programs and activities, including the Museum’s Free Fridays, must be college level and up.
Specialized: Work with Education to develop curricula and learning materials related to the Museum’s mission. Join the crew aboard working schooners to support activities with children sailing in New York Harbor. Training and mentoring is provided.

Requirements: Experience in the field of education, or participation through an internship program.
Hours: 3-5 hours at a time, both weekdays and weekends. Short-term volunteers and interns are often needed on third Fridays and for Saturday programs.
Additional Requirements: Positions requiring one-on-one work with children, handicapped, or elderly visitors may require a police-records check, a drug test, and a complete work history.
